Bas-Relief Wall Mural Honouring Eileen Gray at Maybourne Riviera

A Sculpted Plaster Tribute to the Vision and Legacy of a Design Icon

Perched high above the French Riviera, the Maybourne Riviera Hotel is a striking example of contemporary architecture steeped in cultural references. As part of the hotel’s bespoke interiors, Fine Art Mouldings was invited to design, craft and install a custom sculpted plaster mural that would celebrate the life and legacy of pioneering designer and architect Eileen Gray.

We were proud to hand-deliver this work on-site in France, ensuring the finish, detail, and spirit of the piece were upheld to the highest standard — just as Eileen herself would have expected.

A Bas-Relief Wall Mural with a Story to Tell

The mural was conceived as a bas-relief wall mural, designed in collaboration with the interior design studio to interpret Eileen Gray’s achievements in a rich, sculptural medium. It forms a centrepiece within the hotel — not merely a decoration, but a narrative wall art in plaster that invites guests to pause and reflect.

Prominent within the composition is a relief representation of Villa E-1027, Gray’s iconic modernist home on the Côte d’Azur. Carefully modelled by hand, the plaster captures the geometric purity and design innovation that made the villa a landmark of 20th-century architecture. Alongside this, abstract elements and personal motifs pay tribute to her contributions to furniture, lacquerwork and avant-garde interiors.

Handcrafted in Our Studio, Installed on Site

Every element of this decorative plasterwork installation was sculpted by hand in our studio using specialist materials that allowed us to achieve fine surface texture and crisp detail. From flowing architectural lines to the symbolic forms drawn from Gray’s work, the custom sculpted plaster panels were designed with precision and intent.

To maintain the integrity of the finish and ensure a perfect integration into the hotel’s architecture, our skilled artisans travelled to the south of France and personally undertook the final fitting and finishing. This direct involvement meant that transitions, lighting conditions, and surrounding materials were all considered during the luxury hotel plaster installation process.

Plaster as Legacy, Not Just Surface

This was more than a decorative feature — it was a deeply meaningful tribute. By using plaster to depict and honour the creative life of Eileen Gray, the mural becomes a physical embodiment of her spirit — calm, intelligent, and deeply modern.

In this context, plaster is not just an interior material, but a storytelling medium. The result is a piece of narrative wall art in plaster that is as poetic as it is permanent — a fitting homage to one of the greats of modern design.
