Of the many types of plaster arches there are three main categories. These are; circular, pointed and parabolic. From here you can then choose the characteristics you want your plaster arch to have. Certain shaped plaster arches typically come hand in hand with certain decorative elements. Contemporary – more subtle plaster arches with softer features that typically blend in to the surroundings. This is something you’d choose if you wanted a bit more simple, clean effect giving the room a unique but simplistic look, not being the main focal point of the room but an artistic feature adding to it.

Traditional – usually a more grand design, a wow factor for any room and more than likely the first feature a guest would notice or remember once leaving a room. They can be as grand as the client likes, tailored to a certain era, or even incorporate family crests.

All of our plaster arches are bespoke to the opening they are made for. We work closely with the client to understand their specific requirements and design something truly unique. This may involve choosing the shape of the plaster arch, the profile of it and also the enrichments / motifs to decorate it if required. Our in house design team are very experienced in creating plaster arches of any nature including supporting corbels, pilasters and detailed enrichments such as keystones.

A plaster arch is an architectural feature created many years ago and favoured for its capability to carry large amounts of weight and distribute it evenly.

A plaster arch is made by hand in our workshops. Depending on the type of plaster arch chosen the method is different. Traditionally they used to be run in-situ on site but with modern materials, we tend to make them off site, deliver and fix them ourselves.

Most plaster arches, like any moulding are run by hand on a bench. Once the profile of the archway is run at the correct radius or radii, it is joined together where necessary. If there are enrichments on your archway, these are hand sculpted, moulded and embellished into your arch design. Plaster arches can come supplied in many pieces depending on the design.

Our traditional plaster arches are fixed with screws through the wooden fixings hand placed inside by us. They would also be wired and wadded into place which acts as a second fixing in case the first should fail. To date, we haven’t had any fixing fail.

All pieces of the plasterwork are ‘married up’ or ‘leveled in’ to make sure they are perfectly in line, before being fixed into position. From here all joints are ‘made good’ to be invisible to the eye and ready for painting.

Repairing a plaster arch is like repairing any other type of plasterwork. Chips and cracks can be cut out and refilled with plaster of paris together with hessian support if required.

If the problem is greater a survey needs to be completed before advice on repair can be given.

Not at all, plaster arches are evolving at all times to keep in with current trends. At the moment plaster arches typically are much more subtle compared to the traditional plaster arches you’d see in heritage houses.
