Over the years, layers of paint had built up across significant plaster mouldings and interior features, masking the detail and obscuring the original finishes. To carefully strip this back without damaging the underlying material, we employed Peelaway 1 — a specialist paint removal system designed for use on multi-layered, oil-based and lead paints. Specialist Paint Removal from Plaster Mouldings in Historic London Property

Fine Art Mouldings recently completed a specialist historic paint removal project at a prestigious Grade-listed property in London. Although the address remains confidential, the scale and sensitivity of this conservation effort showcased our team’s deep knowledge of traditional materials, restoration techniques, and responsible heritage cleaning practices.

Specialist Cleaning for Historic Interiors
The cleaning and conservation of architectural features within heritage properties requires more than just the right tools — it calls for experience, patience, and material understanding. Our team carried out the process entirely by hand, applying Peelaway in carefully staged sections to ensure precise control and full visibility of the substrate as layers were removed.
Each zone was monitored for dwell time, neutralised, and gently rinsed, exposing the original plaster beneath with no abrasion or mechanical force. This non-destructive approach is vital in listed buildings, where long-term preservation and breathable finishes are often a statutory requirement.

Supporting Conservation-Led Design
As with many of our conservation projects, we worked closely with heritage consultants, interior specialists and conservation architects to plan and implement the work. Our method aligned with principles outlined by Historic England and SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) — particularly their guidance on minimum intervention, reversibility, and sustainability.
Our role extended beyond execution: we supported the project team with material assessments, provided recommendations for compatible finishes, and ensured all work met both conservation and aesthetic standards.

Preserving Plaster Detail with Care
Throughout the process, we uncovered beautifully detailed plaster cornices, architraves, and decorative wall mouldings, many of which had not been visible for decades. This restoration not only enhanced the property’s aesthetic value but also increased its architectural significance.
At Fine Art Mouldings, we specialise in working on private residences, listed interiors, and heritage buildings, delivering bespoke conservation solutions that bridge traditional craftsmanship with modern preservation standards.
