Types of columns:

Doric columns:
The Doric shaft is channelled (fluted). The capital is one of the most simple while yet still beautiful, with an expanding neck and delicate curves.

Ionic columns:
A truly beautiful example of a column. The volutes and scrolls of the ionic capital and fluted body create a classical and grand impression.

Corinthian columns:
The most elegant of all columns, consisting of two sets of staggered acanthus leaves on it’s capital and four scrolls, one to each corner.

Tuscan columns:
Tuscan columns are currently the most popular type of column with a simple capital similar to a Doric column but also a plain shaft.

Composite columns:
Very decorative columns and a mixture or eras composed of Ionic volutes and Corinthian acanthus-leaf decoration.

Ornamental Columns are columns which are more ‘decorative’ or ‘ornate’ than others. The shaft of the column would be fluted and the capital would be heavily enriched for example like an Ionic capital or Corinthian capital.

A pediment is a triangle shaped moulding that typically sits on top of columns. These a most commonly used over doorways to create a grand entrance.

A column is an architectural decorative feature which typically is used to support other architectural elements such as a pediment. Pilasters are half columns that are embedded onto the walls surrounding the room which normally do not serve a structural purpose and are purely decorative.
